Isochronic Tones: An Effective, Lesser-Known Sound Therapy

A type of brainwave entrainment (BWE), isochronic tones are considered a highly effective and therapeutic tool. BWE refers to “the use of rhythmic stimuli with the intention of producing a frequency-following response of brainwaves to match the frequency of the stimuli” and by no means is a new technology (p. 38). In fact, BWE has been investigated and used since the late 1800s.

In the case of isochronic tones, pulses of sound act as a stimulus for the brain, through our sense of hearing. A single isochronic tone is simply a tone that turns on and off rapidly in a particular pattern. This intense pattern of sound to no sound induces a strong neural response, altering one’s brainwaves quicker than other forms of BWE. Another benefit to isochornic tones is no headphones are required to reap the benefits.

An isochronic tone turns on and off in a repetitive pattern.

In general, isochronic tones have proven useful for:

  • Motivation / Energy

  • Anxiety relief

  • Pain Relief, Management

  • Cognitive Function

  • Studying, Memory, and Focus

  • Meditation

  • Emotional Stability

  • Improved Sleep

A Comprehensive Review of the Psychological Effects of Brainwave Entrainment, published in the peer-reviewed journal of Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine concludes “People suffering from cognitive functioning deficits, stress, pain, headaches/migraines, PMS, and behavioral problems benefited from BWE” (p. 38).
