EMFs: What You Don't Know Can Hurt You

Lexy Lane

Electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) or electromagnetic radiation have become an inevitable staple of life in the modern world. Cell phones, WiFi systems, Bluetooth devices, SMART meters, microwaves, and cellular towers are just a few pathways of EMF exposure. Some are less inclined to believe that which isn’t immediately visible but evidence is mounting against the danger of exposure. Earlier this year, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a warning against cellphone usage, expressing concern, and advocating for reduced exposure. Actions towards EMF reduction as recommended by the department include the following:

  • Keeping the phone away from the body

  • Reducing cell phone use when the signal is weak

  • Reducing the use of cell phones to stream audio or video, or to download or upload large files

  • Keeping the phone away from the bed at night

  • Removing headsets when not on a call

  • Avoiding products that claim to block radio frequency energy. These products may actually increase your exposure. Source: California Department of Public Health Cell Phone Guidance Handout

Chronic exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) causes mitochondrial dysfunction on a large scale from free radicals resulting in DNA damage. Free radicals induced from EMF exposure have demonstrated links to neuropsychiatric, cardiac, and reproductive dysfunction. At present, there is concern over EMFs and cancer, “a potential consequence of mitochondrial damage”. To better understand the molecular breakdown of the damage EMFs cause, click here.

Electromagnetic radiation symptoms can include migraines, insomnia, heart palpations, fatigue, allergies, brain fog, vision distortions, behavioral disorders, a ringing in the ears, numbness, tingling, itching, nerve and muscle pain, among others. When it comes to our health, is it worth the potential risk? Since reducing my EMF exposure, I can personally attest to less nervous symptom disturbances, reduced migraines, no more insomnia, and more energy.

In addition to following the CDPH’s recommendations, here are some other tools to assist in reducing EMF exposure. Know that the largest EMF offenders in one’s home are the WiFi router, cellular devices, and (believe it or not,) baby monitors! Aluminum foil offers massive protection against EMFs, is inexpensive and likely already in the kitchen! Extremely effective in blocking EMFs, use aluminum foil to shield WiFi routers and other areas of concern. If you own or purchase an EMF meter, you can use the device to find sources of EMFs in your home. For cell phones, limit their use, do not sleep with them, and consider using airplane mode or turning them off when they are not needed. As for baby monitors, turn them off when not in use, opt for a non-digital monitor, or consider moving baby into your bedroom. Last but not least, enjoy nature and get grounded!
